Lafferty, LaJoie Give Back to the Community with Derby RaceFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 24, 2011 On Wednesday night, it was all about giving back to the community for two-time NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion Randy LaJoie and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver and owner Chris Lafferty. Both drivers spent the evening with Boy Scout troops 515 and 815 in Kannapolis, N.C. for their annual pinewood derby race. Beforehand, scouts were able to take their picture with a No. 89 show car that Lafferty brought along with him. Lafferty and LaJoie spoke about the importance of the values the scouts learn in Boy Scouts and how they will use it later in life. “Scouts is not only a fun organization, but the values you learn along the way really help you while growing up,” says Lafferty, “It’s an honor to come out and help these kids with their derby race.” LaJoie was the official starter of the race; letting each set of cars loose and flying down the track. Lafferty would monitor the finish line and call the winner of each race. Lafferty mentioned that he got a little nervous at times. “Those cars were pretty fast, there were some close calls at the finish line,” laughed Lafferty. After all the races were run, all the autographs signed, and all the pictures taken; both drivers could tell how much it meant to the scouts. For a lot of them, it was the first time ever meeting real NASCAR drivers. It gave, for some, that mindset that anything in life is possible. The next generation of drivers could be one of them!
