Cole Rhoton Scores Midwest Asphalt Oval Series National Championship

CONCORD, N.C. – The inaugural Midwest Asphalt Oval Series (MAOS) season has come to a conclusion with the Elite Champion point race ending in a nail bitter when Cole Rhoton, an Indianapolis, Indiana, native claimed the title. Rhoton is a 2012 graduate of Southport High School.
Along with winning the title, Rhoton has been invited to take the next step to fulfill his lifelong racing dream and complete the Lafferty Motorsports Driver Development Program in the heart of NASCAR country – Concord, NC! The Lafferty Motorsports Driver Development Program is designed to provide an opportunity for drivers like Rhoton to make it into racing.
It’s possible at the completion of the program, a driver may have the opportunity to become a driver for Lafferty Motorsports and soon find themselves behind the wheel in one of their local racing divisions or even the No. 89 Lafferty Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Rhoton piloted the No. 25 Champ Kart for the MAOS national series, walking away with multiple heat races and three feature wins enroute to the national championship. The point race ended with Rhoton edging out runner-up Andrew Schaitel by only two points.
The “Elite Series Champion” award is the toughest award to win in the MAOS as only one racer can win. It consists of four different ways to collect points, the categories being entries, passing, finishing, and race weekends. The unique point system separates racers like Rhoton from the competition and put his skills to work as every race counts – even the heat races, and is designed so that one more pass, one more entry, one more place higher in the finishing order plays a huge factor.
Rhoton went into the Grand National race neck and neck with Schaitel as the outcome could have gone either way. Throughout the event, Rhoton gained valuable points toward his total as he claimed two heat race wins along with several passing points – which served very valuable later in the event as Rhoton’s day was abruptly cut short while leading the feature and would lose a tire; costing him a top podium finish.
